Your Outdoor Classroom

ALF Learning

Together our ALF Villages provide a comprehensive and diverse range of learning experiences for schools and colleges. Whilst each of our settings and their provision is unique they all share the ALF Learning approach. This learning approach stems from the belief that effective learning happens when it is:

  • Real and Relevant
  • Exciting and Engaging
  • Creative and Challenging

High quality learning outside the classroom (LOtC) through direct experience enables effective learning and the holistic development of all individuals. ALF is committed to progressing not just knowledge and skills but also the personal, social, physical and emotional well-being of all who visit and work with us. Compelling research based evidence identifies the following benefits to LOtC:

  • Raising educational achievement and standards
  • Developing physical well-being and healthier lifestyles
  • Improving mental well-being and stress levels which impact on improved behaviour
  • Attendance and motivation amongst learners
  • Nurturing of social and emotional intelligence
  • Raising self-esteem and confidence
  • Broadening horizons and developing active citizenship
  • Addressing children’s disconnect with the natural environment
  • Development of a sense of place and stewards of the environment
  • Managing risk and developing skills in a wide range of environments

Apprenticeship Programme

Our philosophy of holistic learning is at the heart of our development of an alternative provision for 16-19 year olds where real, relevant training in the work place is offered and we welcome applications from those seeking a career in the outdoor industry to join our apprenticeship programme – hr@alfcharity.org to find out more
